Fishermen’s activities after finishing fishing in Golo Mori Village, Kab. West Manggarai, NTT
West Manggarai, NTT – Insan Bumi Mandiri was again chosen as the implementing partner in the program Empowering Youth at Across ASEAN (EYAA) for the third year in a row. This year, the program will be focused on empowering coastal communities in Golo Mori Village, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.
Empowering Youth at Across ASEAN (EYAA) is a collaboration program between the Maybank Foundation and the ASEAN Foundation which aims to empower youth through social voluntary activities that have an impact. Eyaa brings together civil society and social enterprise organizations from various ASEAN countries with ASEAN young volunteers to design and run relevant social programs for local communities. With the support of mentoring and cross -country networks, this program becomes a learning space, collaboration, and concrete action for the younger generation to respond to various development challenges with an innovative and measurable approach.
Golo Mori was chosen as the location of implementation because it has extraordinary natural potential and is included in the big plan for the development of national tourism. However, the coastal community still faces gaps. Access to electricity, business infrastructure, and market connections are very limited. Fishermen have difficulty storing catches because there are no cold storage facilities. Women can only rely on income from seasonal sales on the beach.
Through a program titled Glorious Golo Mori, Insan Bumi Mandiri initiated a series of empowerment efforts, including development cold storage Solar -powered for fishermen groups, mentoring business processed marine products for women, halal certification training, product development, to strengthening market access. ASEAN volunteers who are members of this program will also be directly involved in the community assistance process.
“As an organization, we believe that changes that have an impact must go hand in hand with the award of culture and traditions that live in the community. Our empowerment is directed to strengthen local identity and wisdom, not replace it,” said Zulfa Faizah Musyahidah, Director of Insan Bumi Mandiri.
The Head of Golo Mori Village, Bapak Samaila, welcomed the presence of this empowerment program in his area. “We are very grateful for the attention given to our village. The presence of programs like this certainly brings great hopes to the community, especially in increasing income and improving the storage conditions of fishermen’s catches. If our citizens can store fish longer and sell at a better price, it will be an extraordinary change. Thank you for the good intentions and support given.”
Previously, Insan Bumi Mandiri had successfully implemented two other Eyaa programs that focused on the empowerment of local communities in the 3T region. In 2023, the weaving program was held in Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with the aim of strengthening the economy of women weavers. This activity includes the construction of a weaving center, training in the use of natural dyes, financial literacy, and training on marketing and development of weaving derivatives. This program involves more than 180 women of weavers and vocational students, and is supported by cooperation with local governments and export partners.
